Melodies of Dev Anand

The name Dev Anand instantly brings to mind eternal melodies like Abhi na jao chhod ke (Hum Dono), Tere mere sapne (Guide) and Phoolon ke rang se (Prem Pujari). The evergreen romantic actor has the distinction of enacting hordes of mellifluous ditties right from his first film Ziddi. Mumbai based music troupe Musicolor organised a grand musical evening titled " Hits of Dev Anand " recently at the Dinanath Mangeshkar hall at Vile Parle. The evening featured an ensemble of timeless classics from films like Kala Bazaar, CID, Munimjee, Solva Saal, Kala Pani, Guide, Nau Do Gyarah, Patita, Love Marriage, Bambai Ka Babu, Jewel Thief, Teen Deviyan, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai, Paying Guest, Tere Mere Sapne, Prem Pujari, Gambler and Johnny Mera Naam. The evergreen songs were presented live on stage by a host of veteran musicians like Ajay Madan (Lead Guitar), Deepak Borkar (Side Rhythm), Sushil Gangavane (Tabla), Vijay Jadhav (Octopad), Vasu Mathre (Congo Dholak), Praveen Phatak, Nilesh Devastali (Keyboards), Mohit Sastry (Flute) and saxophone player Nand Kishore. Talented singers like Srikant Narayan, Sarita Rajesh, Rana Chaterjee, Archana Gore and Kiran Shembekar rendered the classic compositions. Host Bhim Singh encapsulated the career graph of Dev Anand interspersed with interesting anecdotes and incidents related to his illustrious career. The event was supported by Monarch Catalyst Pvt Ltd - A leading player of catalytic technology. The director of the company K Shivasubramanian graced the occasion and was felicitated by singer Sarita Rajesh, who spearheads Musicolor. Shivasubramanian also released two volumes of Vcd and Dvd’s, produced by Shemaroo video, featuring songs of Dev Anand. Another highlight of the evening was retired airline manager, V S Shirali’s outstanding mouth-organ performance in the song ‘Hai apna dil toh awara’ from Solva Saal. The impact was tremendous and it literally had the audience screaming for once more. Other memorable compositions presented included Aaja panchi akela hai, Sun le tu dil ki sada, Chhod do anchal, Dil aaj shayar, Apni toh har aah ek thoofan hai, Jiya o jiya and Khoya khoya chand. However the song which received the loudest round of applause was the intricate ‘Hoton pe aisi baat’ from Jewel Thief which was flawlessly presented by the talented artiste of Musicolor. On the whole it was a melodious evening, which revived several nostalgic moments.
